Tired of working with sketches of cartoon characters in order to do your 3-D characters? Well today you'll be using a photograph. Go online and choose a photo of something or someone you'd like to work with. Import it to PhotoImpct and use the same process as the two days before. Catrina is the best student at doing these that I've ever seen. Being the only advanced student, perhaps she will help up out today and show some examples of her work or perhaps give a pointer or two. Good luck.

LESSON THIRTY

Well here is a sketch that I drew for you all to use for today's lesson. As you can see it's a little more complicated than the ones that you guys drew yesterday. Copy and paste this image into PhotoImpact and do the same as you did yesterday. Create a very colorful three dimensional character using this sketch as inspiration.

LESSON TWENTY-NINE

Today's lesson is quite an interesting one, or at least I think it is. You're going to learn how to create a 3-D cartoon-like creature from nothing but a simple line sketch. You'll be doing this for most of this week so I hope you enjoy it. Click on the link below for your tutorial.

LESSON TWENTY-EIGHT

I've heard enough from some of you about my choice of lesson plans that it is obvious to me that you need to come up with your own for your final animated gif. On Friday I asked each of you to develop what you feel would be an appropriate lesson plan that everyone would enjoy working on since I seem to be out of touch with you guys. Not only should it be enjoyable it should also prove to be challenging to everyone and should take two or three days in order to complete. This should showcase your ability to work with the tools in PhotoImpact as well as your creativity and originality. Start working on your own lesson plan today. Surely no one will be finished with this final animation in just one day, but what do I know? I can't wait to see the wonderful lesson plans that everyone has come with. By the way, when completed you will be asked to grade your own lesson plan and final animation; and I will do the same. This had better be good, advanced, complex, creative and original. How many frames do you need? Enough to accomplish whatever your lesson plans need in order to be complete. Good luck.
Mr. Hewett
P.S. If you do happen to finish your animation in one day, I will have a special assignment for you to work on when I return on Tuesday.

LESSON TWENTY-SEVEN

MERRY CHRISTMAS
I have a job for all of you guys. Every year all art teachers are asked to turn in 10 original student Christmas cards for the Columbus County Schools Christmas Card. I thought instead of sending in just 10 that we could send in one for each Arts Tech student. Here are the details:
The design has to be original - nothing found on the internet. Sorry!
It needs to be 8 1/2 x 11 inches.
There will be no writing on the card other than Merry Christmas.
Try to think of ways to tie in school with Christmas.
Remember, we very seldom have snow so why do a snowy Christmas scene?
Snowmen have not done well in this competition in the past.
No religious symbols or characters will be allowed. Sorry again.
Have more than one idea? Do as many cards as you like. The more you enter the more chances you have to be chosen as official Christmas card designer for Columbus County Schools this year. Do your best work, be creative and email all your entries to me to:
lhewett1@yahoo.com
Good luck.

LESSON TWENTY-SIX

Ever see an animated turkey? Well you're not only going to be seeing one you're going to be creating one for this lesson. This is a two part lesson. The first one is when you will create your turkey using Path Drawing Tools. The second one is creating an animation with the turkey you created. I've made some changes in this lesson from the tutorial. You don't have to do an animated WCHS turkey as the tutorial says; however, you can if you choose to do so. But if you want an alternative lesson do this one. Choose a theme for your turkey. Lots of you like the dark, Gothic, bloody type artwork. Because of this I will allow this type work if it does not going overboard. What do I mean by overboard? Tell me your idea and I'll say "yes or no". Fair enough?
I want you to save your created turkey as a UFO. Why? Because once it is saved in this format you can move all of its parts. Want to do an exploding turkey? You'd need to be able to move every single part of the turkey first. Find a suitable background or create one. I've heard complaints about some of the animations not having been fun. Well this one should be. However if you ever become an actual graphic artist I assure you're definitely be working on projects that you won't find interesting. But it's your job and you have to do what you are required to do. So this is the alternative lesson to Lesson 26. Hope you enjoy it and hope you do it fantastically. Good luck.
Mr. Hewett
P.S. I did not do the two animations at the top of the post. I found them online and decided to use them as examples.

LESSON TWENTY-FIVE

It's autumn and have you noticed all of the falling leaves? Well if not, you will today. Go to the link below for today's lesson. This is not a test as it says in the tutoral, but do your best. You have more freedom to do whatever you like in this lesson. Be creative.

LESSON TWENTY-THREE

I hope you enjoyed doing your first animation yesterday. Most of you did a great job. Well today you're going to do your second one. I did this tutorial and I refer to it as a construction/deconstruct technique. Copy mine or do one similar to it with your own personal taste. The one I did took 20 frames. This is nothing. I have done some with about 100 frames. Don't go over 250 pixels in either direction. Good luck. Be sure to create a folder to store all your frames in and then the finished animated gif as well. Save this folder in your personal folder on the computer not in My Documents.

LESSON TWENTY-TWO

Well it's finally time for you to start working on animated gifs. I hope you enjoy this unit as much as my students have in the past. So click on the link below in order to go to the tutorial. Today we're going to go through this lesson together since I don't have access to a data projector.

Unfortunately your blog will not allow you to upload your animated gifs in your post so be sure to upload them to your personal folder - not into My Documents.
Good luck.

ASSESSMENT TIME

Tomorrow we will begin working with animations. Before we do I need to assess your ability to work with the tools that you have been introduced to thus far. So you are going to be asked to do two pictures for me. One will show me your photo manipulation skills while the second will be one in which you will show me your drawing and text skills.
ASSESSMENT ONE:
Do a picture using at least two photographs. I expect you to maniputlate these photos in some way. Here are some of the tools and techniques you may decide to use: lasso tool, crop tool, blending tool, eyedropper tool, transparency tool, clone tool, color spot, and easy palette. There should be some cutting out of one photo and blending it into the other. I want this picture to look as seamless as possible. It should look like one photograph. Upload this picture to your blog and label it as Assessment One. Also list the tools and techniques that you used as well in your post.
ASSESSMENT TWO:
In this picture you are to show me your drawing skills. You will use such tools as the path drawing tools, paint brush, air brush, z-merge, 2-D and 3-D shapes, text, etc. You should not use a photograph in this picture at all. It should all be drawing and text. Upload this to your blog and label it as Assessment Two and make sure you list all the tools and techniques that you used in the post as well.
Good luck.

So what do you think of this painting? It's one of America's most famous portraits and it was painted by artist, Grant Wood. Today you are going to give this paintng an update. Think outside the box and most of all be creative. Good luck.
