LESSON SEVENTEEN

OK here is today's special assignment. Remember the photograph that I took of you earlier this week? Well you're going to use it in order to "FACE YOUR MONSTER." You're going to create a monster from your own face. Download your photograph from my other blog. Here is the address: http://onlinetechnologyworkshops.blogspot.com/
Import it into PhotoImpact and use any or all of the tools you have been introduced to in order to transform yourself into a monster. Upload your original photo and the monster photo to your blog. Do not put your name on it or mention it is a photo of you. Oh, did I mention that this is another contest? Mr. Mark Coleman who judged the movie poster teaches at Bladen Community College. His Web Graphics class with judge this contest. Hopefully they will choose first place, second and one honorable mention. Well good luck and take all the time you need on this assignment. If two students are sharing a computer, both must do their own monsters. Upload both and label the post as Face Your Monster. Below you will find an example of my monster.

LESSON SIXTEEN

Levitation? Have you ever heard of that word? You may have heard of it as far as magicians are concerned. Lots of them do levitation tricks or tricks in which they cause objects to float. Well today you're going to cause various things to float in a picture. Below you will see two very good examples of what I'm referring to. Decide on what you want to float and then make it happen in your picture. Think very carefully before you start and then be as creative as you can. And by the way, make it look as realistic as possible.

MOVIE POSTER CONTEST RESULTS

Well my friend, Mark, has finally critiqued all the entries of the movie poster contest. By the way, Mark is presently teaching Web Graphics at Bladen Community College. Below are his results. To the three winners congratulations. To the rest of you, I applaud you all for a wonderful job.

Mr. Hewett
Elizabeth (RUNNER UP)
Elizabeth,
Your poster definitely exemplifies the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words.” If you would not have added the title, the catch phrase that you used on the poster instead already gives a big clue as to what your movie is about. You did a wonderful job altering the appearance of Ben Afleck. The dark areas on the face of Kate Winslet also give somewhat of a clearer picture of what the movie is about. The blending of Ben Afleck in the background and bringing Kate Winslet to the foreground of the poster was a good idea. This is definitely an indication to the audience that the movie is centered around Kate Winslet’s character. You did a wonderful job Elizabeth and you should give yourself a pat on the back.
Carla (WINNER)
Carla,
Your poster definitely captured my attention with the red font you used for your title. The effect of the blood dripping down from each letter is eye catching to say the least. I liked the way you divided the characters; using four on the left and on the right. To me, that is a giveaway that something is going to happen to four of characters in the movie. Overall, a good use of space and color. Excellent job Carla!
Josh and Jessie
Josh & Jessie
Loved the font style and font color you used. You did an excellent job manipulating the characters and background image. Would love to have seen the names of the characters on poster. This would have given the audience some idea of who was starring in the movie. Overall, you guys did a good job and should be commended for your work.
Shaq and Juan
Shaq & Juan,
I love the work you guys did with the characters. Based on your movie description, you tried to match the look of the character with its role in the movie. That was an awesome idea. Great job Shaq and Juan!
Kati
Kati,
The font style and color goes well with your poster. It really stands out and grabs the attention of your audience which is what you want to do. I would love to have seen you add more to the poster. This would have really sparked interest in the movie. Overall, you did a really good job with this project.
Alyssa
Alyssa,
You should be applauded for you efforts on this project. You have selected a terrific background image. I would have liked to see you blend the top image into the background. This would have added a scarier effect. Also, the title of your movie is hard to read. The movie title would have looked really nice on the background of the poster; possibly using a red font color. Overall, if allowed by Mr. Hewett, redo your poster and have him send it to me so that I can share it with some of my Web graphics students.
Eric and Chris
Eric and Chris,
I like the manipulation of Angelina Jolie. I am however somewhat confused with the background. I would suggest possibly changing the background image. Try to select something that would be a little more noticeable and goes along with your movie title. Great effort on this project!
Ivan
Ivan,
Great job on the image manipulation and use of space! The use of the red font color was a good idea. Great job on this assignment!
D and T
D & T
Love the use of what appears to be flames and smoke as part of your title text. This gives the impression of a very dark and frightening movie. Also, great job manipulating the background! I can tell you that you put a lot of work and effort into this assignment. Great job!
Zack (HONORABLE MENTION)
Zack,
Your post has a suspenseful feel to it. This is all due in part to the background/ location image. The red font color goes great with the back ground. I can also see where you placed a cross in the Chuck Norris image. This is an eye-catching poster and if this was an actual movie, I would definitely pay to see it. Good job!

LESSON TWELVE

Have you even seen a commercial on TV where the whole picture is black and white except for one thing that is in color? Magazines use this same technique in their advertisements. It's called "Color Spot" and today you're going to learn how to do it. Click on the link below for the tutorial. Be sure to read it in its entirety.

LESSON TEN

Movie titles can make or break a poster. Today you're going to design the title for you poster. First of all choose a font that you like. Decide whether you want it to be all caps or lower and upper. Choose the font color, bold, italics, shadow, etc. Create another post on your blog with the title you have done. This is not the finished piece I assure you. Once this is done, then you will manipulate the type like you did the photos. Think outside the box. Experiment with two or three different designs and also upload them into the same post as your original title. Here are a few suggestions that might give you some inspiration:
One letter a different color than the rest
Use a graphic as one of the letters
Break or cut the letters somehow
Fill the letters with a photograph
Use any of the tools we have discussed thus far - experiment
A graphic artist would work weeks possibly on designing a real movie poster. Don't you think it should take you more than one class period. Don't settle for something humdrum when you can create something totally awesome. Need some inspiration? Take a look at some of the movie titles I found online.
Good luck.

LESSON NINE

Today's lesson deals with location, location, location. Where is your movie going to be filmed and more importantly, which location is going to be on your movie poster? Is it going to be an indoor or outdoor shot? Is it going to be daytime or night? Which season is it going to be? Refer back to your description from yesterday. After choosing the perfect location or online photo, upload it to your blog as is and label it as LOCATION, what else? Give me a brief statement as to why you chose this photograph or photographs. Yes, you can use more than one and create a collage effect. The location photo(s) need to be manipulated in some way rather than just using it as is. I will be checking all photos uploaded to your blog to make sure each one has been manipulated.
You should have your description of your movie, your actors/actresses and your location. Now it's time to start putting makeup on your actors to make them look the way they will in your movie. Add beards and mustaches, change hair color or take off all hair, make them look older, injured, abused, wicked, etc. You have GOT to make changes from the original photos. You may even change their clothes. The object is not to find an actor's photo online and use it as is. That would not show me your skill in photo manipulation. Have your makeup or photo manipulation enhance the appearance of your actors. Once this assignment is completed, upload them to your blog as well as ACTORS/ACTRESSES.
Good luck,

LESSON EIGHT

Well you are still one of my top notch graphic artists in my advertising firm. This week's assignment is to design a movie poster. Here is a list of the titles to choose from:
Silence of Heart
Night of Death
War Hero
My Dog Did It
Hearts Broken
Strawberry Flowers
Master and Servant
You're Not Who I Expected
Digital Date
Carnival Carnage
Human Hunter
Teacher Who?
The Day I Died
The Race That Was Not Won
ASSIGNMENT ONE:
Select the title you want to work with and then create a new post in your blog. In it briefly tell me the story line of the movie, the time (century or year) it takes place, the location, whether it's a comedy, drama, horror, etc., the names of the characters and most importantly, the names of the actors and the actresses in the starring roles. I will need to refer to this post so that I can become familiar with your movie. This post will be deleted once we complete this assignment.
ASSIGNMENT TWO:
Choose at least two actors that you want to be in your movie. Find their pictures online and import them into PhotoImpact. Using any or all of the tools we have worked with so far, transform the picture of your actor into the character he/she is to become in your movie. For example, if you want Johnny Depp to be an old man or an alien from another planet, change him into that character using such tools as the Clone tool, the Blend tool, the Paintbrush or Airbrush, etc. If he needs to be bald take away all his hair or if he needs antennae, either create them with the Path Drawing tool or Clone tool. Create a second post to your blog and upload the two or three actor photos. Use "MOVIE CHARACTERS" as the title for the post. The next assignment will be in the following lesson.

FRIDAY OCT. 7 EXTRA CREDIT

As usual Friday is "catch up" day for any student who might be behind in a project or two. But for those of you who aren't behind, here is a chance to make extra credit. I suggest all students work until I tell you that time is up. Yesterday was a prime example of what happens when students want to play instead of working. They get into trouble. So once you finish this assignment, do it over with another photograph. Double extra credit.
Here is a photograph of Ms. Jocelyn Wildenstein who has become quiet famous for being known as the ugliest woman. She also has probably had more plastic surgeries than any other person. She has spent over four million dollars on facial reconstruction. Wouldn't you agree that her surgeries went terribly wrong? Just look at what she looks like now..
Your assignment today is to find a photo of a person online and then manipulate it to show us what he/she looked like after plastic surgeries gone bad. Do a before and after so I can see the photo you started with and the finished product. You may include the words "Before" and "After" in your project. Start with someone rather attractive and do your magic.
Upload these projects to your blog as "Plastic Surgery Gone Bad". Have fun and be creative. Good luck.

LESSON SEVEN

Some of you did very well with yesterday's assignment involving the Lasso tool, Blending tool and the Clone tool while others had difficulties. I'll admit most of the problems were technical coming from saving photos from Google Docs where I store my lessons. Well today we're not using Google Docs. Go to Google Images and import the picture of the cup and saucer into PhotoImpact.
Fill the cup with coffee, tea, milk, etc. using the Path Drawing Tools. Click on the Oval. You may need to unlock the padlock on the top tool bar in order to elongate the liquid so it will fit the cup. Once finished, be sure to lock the pad lock back as it was. Then go online and begin to import images into PhotoImpact that you want to include with the cup and saucer. You can use the Lasso tool or the Clone tool or a combination of both. Try to make these items look as natural as possible. This may include using shadows or reflections.
Here is a quick picture I made. Put as many things into the picture in order to make it top notch.
Good luck

Now that you know how to use the Lasso Tool and the Blur Tool, here is a wonderful lesson for you to prove to me exactly how well you can use them together. You're going to cut out a little girl from one photograph and paste her into another one with, of all things, a lion. And when you finish you should not be able to tell that two photos were put together. Sound interesting? Well click on the link below and see what it's all about.

LESSON FIVE

There were some awesome logos created yesterday. If you didn't have time to complete yours, you need to do so before starting this lesson.
So many of you wanted to create your own business in yesterday's assignment but I wanted you to experience what it is like to be a real graphic artist having to work with only the information that the client furnishes. Well today you can create your own business. Be creative! If you want to use one of the names from yesterday and change it into another business, that's fine. Just don't use the name of a real business. I'll take points off for that.
Good luck.
